I’m Jamie Gwilliam from Balclutha down south. Moved here to North Canterbury, probably 10 years ago. All our children go to various schools around the area and I’m also involved in coaching in the area as well so we’re out and about in the community as a family out here, so that’s great.

I’ve probably built over a hundred homes: commercial, residential, hill builds, log homes, farms, and stations as well. The first thing I really got excited about with Stroud Homes was the personal relationship with the client. It’s about their experience and making it enjoyable for them.

Clients can definitely talk with the builder. I am the builder and this is my business. Over 150 beautiful home designs: residential, rural, duplex. We’ll meet customers on-site before they buy the land. We’ll take a house plan that they may be interested in and check it out. And also with floor levels and site levels, which is huge on the bigger picture at the end of the day.

Once they’ve paid their deposit and we receive the council consent, then we’re straight on-site. They do walk away knowing, “Okay. Well, we’re talking to a builder here.” We know that that is very reassuring for them. I have heard comments from clients that have come into the shop and they’re starting with us for the fact that they’ve had a good chat with me, me being a home builder. That knowledge is very positive when we are having our first consultation.

The communication and relationship I have with the customer in the trades, keeping in touch with the client, letting them know how everything’s tracking, that’s what makes a smooth building process. It really does come down to communication.

I think the most passionate part of building for me is seeing the client’s reaction at the end of the build. You know, everyone’s happy and they’re happy and we’ve done a fantastic job and they recommend us and just forming relationships. That’s what I’m really passionate about building

In the next five years, I’d really like to be known as one of the good builders around North Canterbury. There’s a lot of good builders around North Canterbury, I’d love to be striving to be amongst them, and have a good name for Stroud Homes Christchurch North that we provide and deliver a great service.
